How to get from London Airports to Southampton Cruise Port

Getting From the Airport to the Cruise Port

You’ve booked your cruise, your flights are sorted. But what do you do next? How do you get from the airport to Southampton? We’re based in the UK here at Cruise Ports Info HQ, so we know all the quirks and must-knows for navigating UK transport systems.

Click below to find the best option for you when flying into Heathrow or Gatwick Airport.

If you’re arriving at another UK airport, we recommend National Express in most cases. This will avoid a potential disaster if the trains go on strike or are delayed (they’re frequent here unfortunately). For bespoke advice, contact us here.

If you’re arriving at Southampton Airport – no prebooked transfer needed, just hop in a taxi/Uber to your hotel or to the port.

Don’t book your flight the same day as your cruise sails away. The same goes for your return flight, if you have to fly back the same day then book a late afternoon flight at the earliest. Any delays could lead to you missing the ship or plane, it’s just not worth it! Check out our Disclaimer for further details.

best Airport to Fly Into
Arriving from a Long Haul Flight

We recommend arriving into Heathrow Airport. It’s the closest London airport to Southampton whether you choose to travel by car, train or coach. The journey by car is around 70 miles versus around 90 miles from Gatwick. We’ll go into more detail on that later.

Arriving from a Short Haul Flight

We recommend arriving into Southampton Airport. It’s around 7 miles from the port, so you will be saved a lot of hassle if you can land here. Don’t worry though, no matter which airport you land at we’ve got you covered.

Heathrow Terminals to Southampton Stations

Option 1 – National Express Coach

Journey Time: 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes

Why book a coach?

National Express is widely trusted and highly reviewed across the UK. We love these coaches, they are large, comfortable and air conditioned. They generally have friendly drivers who will make sure all your luggage is loaded and unloaded safely. Please be aware though the time of the coach can be changed, this shouldn’t be a stress if you’re arriving the day before the cruise and leaving the day after you disembark, which we seriously highly recommend.

Travelling by coach is one of the cheapest options, unless you are travelling with a large group whereby the price could be equivalent to getting a private minibus. With National Express, of course prices vary, but it’s generally around £20 per person, with luggage included (check the full luggage policy here: National Express Luggage Policy).

How to book

To book head to National Express. Once there, type Heathrow in the travel from section. Then select “Heathrow (Most Popular)” – this will show you departures from all terminals. You can then choose the best one for you. Next, type Southampton in the travel to section. Select Southampton Coach Station Harbour Parade.

Choose the date you arrive at the airport (sounds obvious but make sure you select the flight arrival date, not the cruise sail away date). Select the return date if you’re taking the coach both ways, enter the amount of passengers and click find your journey.

For the return journey make sure to book a coach arriving at the airport at least 3 hours before your flight time.

Option 2 – Train and Mixed Transport (coach or tube)

Journey Time: Approximately 2 hours

Why book a train?

We have to be honest, taking the train in the UK right now is a risky option. There have been ongoing mass strikes since 2022. They’ve eased off in 2025 but they haven’t stopped entirely. You should also consider that whilst there are sections for luggage and no restrictions on taking any size of bag on a train, it might be busy and difficult to navigate with big bags. However, if you have plenty of time, you are able bodied and not an anxious traveler, then the train could still work out for you.

So why would you book a train? The best reason is if your plan includes a visit to London before going to Southampton. The only other reason to choose this over the coach or a taxi/private transfer has to be simply that you prefer to travel by rail.

Train prices in the UK are dynamic. This means the price will go up and up until the time of departure. The best time to book for a cheap price is 12 weeks before departure date, as this is when the special advanced rates go on sale. You don’t need to do anything differently to get them, just do the same search and the cheapest price available will show up.

How to book

For the train, head to Trainline to book your tickets. It’s the booking site the majority of the UK uses for it’s train bookings, it’s super user friendly and free to use. Check below for more details on which stations you need to search.

For Railair tickets, you can pay the driver on the day, but for guaranteed seats and better prices; book online in advance at Railair. You’ll only need Railair if you’re taking the Railair and train option, more details below.

For tube tickets, the cheapest simplest way to pay is with contactless, whether that’s on your phone or credit/debit card. You just tap them on the yellow circle card reader to get through the gate, and again when you exit the station. Remember, everyone traveling will need a device/card to pay with if you do this. It can be the same bank account, for example you could use your phone and your partner could use the card. If contactless isn’t an option for you, use the ticket machines to purchase a single ticket.

RailAir and train – No London visit

Railair is a Heathrow Transfer coach that costs around £24 for a single trip. The coach takes you from terminal 2, 3 and 5 to Reading Train Station in around an hour, depending on which terminal you get on at. There are no luggage restrictions and as with National Express, the coaches have free Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

After the coach you’ll catch the train from Reading Station to Southampton Central.

Tube and train – No London visit

When you search Heathrow – Southampton, you’ll be given the option to travel for just under 2 hours with 2 changes. You’ll go from Heathrow Terminal 5 tube station to Hayes and Harlington on the Elizabeth Line for 11 minutes. You’ll change tube, but stay on the Elizabeth Line and ride to Reading for 35 minutes. From Reading it’s a 51 minute train to Southampton Central Station.

Tube and Train – With London Visit

Journey Time to London: Approximately 30 minutes

Take the Elizabeth line from Heathrow to London Paddington Station. You can pay for the tickets with contactless on your phone (Apple or Google Pay, usually). If that’s not an option for you, ticket’s can be purchased for £12.80 per person from the ticket machines.

Once you’re in central London you can get a black cab, an Uber, a bus or the tube again to your accommodation. You’re welcome to contact us here if you need any help on mapping out this or any part of your journey.

Alternative: Railair and National Express do also run coaches from Heathrow into London, if you’d prefer.

Journey Time to Southampton: Approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes

When it’s time to journey to Southampton you’ll head to London Waterloo for your pre-booked direct train to Southampton Central Station.

Option 3 – Private Transfer

Journey Time: Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes

Why book a car?

Booking a car or minibus is the only way to leave the airport and get to your Southampton hotel with door to door service. This is going to be your best option if you’re travelling in a larger group or a family with small children or if you’re with elderly people.

Of course the total cost will be higher than the other options we’ve described, but depending on how many adults you are travelling with it could actually be more cost effective than the coach or train.

The other major benefit of this option is that you should be safe to travel on boarding day. Of course, leaving as early possible is always going to be the best way to avoid stress from unexpected delays.

How to book

Book a car at Viator to book a private transfer. Just search Heathrow to Southampton Transfer. We recommend this highly rated transfer service on Viator, you can select up to 8 passengers and up to 8 suitcases. At the time of writing, with a booking a week in advance the cost is £325 for the whole group (£40 each if all 8 passengers were paying adults).

Gatwick Terminals to Southampton Stations

Option 1 – National Express Coach

Journey Time: 3 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours

Why book a coach?

National Express is widely trusted and highly reviewed across the UK. We love these coaches, they are large, comfortable and air conditioned. They generally have friendly drivers who will make sure all your luggage is loaded and unloaded safely.

Travelling by coach is one of the cheapest options, unless you are travelling with a large group whereby the price could be equivalent to getting a private minibus. With National Express, of course prices vary, but it’s generally around £30 per person, with luggage included (check the full luggage policy here: National Express Luggage Policy).

That said, a con with travelling by coach from Gatwick is the length of the journey. It can be up to 4 hours long which is twice the time it would take by car.

How to book

To book head to National Express. Once there, type Gatwick in the travel from section. Check if you are arriving into North or South Terminal so you can select the correct departure point.

So why would you book a train? You could use this option if you’re going into London for a visit before going to Southampton. Or if you’re going direct to Southampton it is going to be a lot quicker than the coach.

Train prices in the UK are dynamic. This means the price will go up and up until the time of departure. The best time to book for a cheap price is 12 weeks before departure date, as this is when the special advanced rates go on sale.

Gatwick Express and train – No London visit

Journey Time: Approx 2 hours 20 minutes

The Gatwick Express is a train that will take you to Brighton Train Station that takes just 26 minutes. If you would like help planning a day out in Brighton, please contact us here.

Next you’ll catch the train from Brighton Station to Southampton Central. It’s a direct train which will take about 1 hour 50 minutes.

Train – No London visit

Journey Time: Approx 1 hour 39 minutes

The reason for this is, it’s a nice easy change. You’re going from Gatwick Airport to Clapham Junction and switching platforms to take the rest of the journey to Southampton Central.

How to Book

We recommend booking with IRide – they have a fantastic online booking system. You can book up to 8 passengers and choose to pay by cash or card. The website looks like a third party booking system. But it isn’t, it’s a Southampton based taxi firm. They also have at least one female taxi driver, who was a wonderful chauffeur for our last trip to Southampton Port. They have set rates which range from £130 to £180 depending on the amount of passengers and luggage.

Southampton Stations to Your Accommodation

Southampton Coach Harbour Station – there’s a small taxi rank, in our experience there are 3 or 4 taxis waiting. So your best bet is to order an Uber, since that’s not enough for a coach full of people. Uber is widely used in the UK.

Southampton Central Train Station – there’s a slightly bigger taxi rank where you can jump into a clearly marked taxi.

Both stations have clear places to wait; you don’t need to find a hidden ride app area. For the coach, you’ll just step off and order it from where you stand. For the train station, just exit the front doors and order an Uber to pick you up at the taxi rank/jump in a waiting taxi.

Southampton Airport to your Accommodation

Option 1 – Prebooked Taxi

Journey Time: Approximately 16 minutes (based on Moxy Hotel – our recommended hotel)

Why book a Taxi

Whilst Southampton is a much smaller airport than Heathrow and Gatwick, you will still be battling a lot of people wanting a taxi. If you’re in a larger group, you’ll have to wait for multiple taxis to be available. Prebooking adds a level of comfort, knowing you’ll be all set and ready to be whisked to your accommodation.

Option 2 – Train and Walk or Taxi

Journey Time: Approximately 15 – 25 minutes

Why book a train?

We recommend catching the train if you have accommodaton booked within a 5-minute walk of Southampton Central Station. In this case, you can just follow signs to Southampton Airport Walkway and jump on a train for around £9 that takes between 7 and 11 minutes.

If you want or need to get a taxi from Southampton Central Station, follow the Southampton Stations to your Accommodation guide above.

How to book

For the train, head to Trainline to book your tickets. It’s the booking site the majority of the UK uses for it’s train bookings, it’s super user friendly and free to use. You’ll need to search Southampton Airport Parkway to Southampton Central Station.

Option 3 – Taxi Rank or Uber

Journey Time: Approximately 16 minutes (based on Moxy Hotel – our top recommendation!)

There is a taxi rank as soon as you leave the main arrivals area. You can order an Uber to this taxi rank as well. This is a small and easy to navigate airport. Use this option if you are solo or in a pair with not a lot of luggage.
